  • Harvesting season but also cleaning and planting season, autumn is an important time to enjoy garden vegetables during winter!

    Finish harvesting
Numerous vegetables are on the decline, not so much because of the humidity or coolness, but because days are getting shorter. Summer vegetables are in this case, like tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and marrows (Pumpkins, melons, cucumbers…). Do not let them vegetate as they will not produce much more. They will give you one last harvest. The fruits which are not fully ripe can finish their ripening behind a sunny windowsill or even on a terrace if it does not rain.
Do not forget to dig out of the soil the vegetables which do not want to spend the winter buried, like potatoes. If you have not harvested them already, it is not too late to do so. On the other hand, keep in situ, Beetroots, Leeks and other edible root vegetables. Pick them as and when needed as they do not keep well in the open air and lose their melting flavour.

    Clean up the soil
Do some weeding wherever you have removed crops or in places where the soil has been left free from crops. In this season, nature does not like empty spaces and fills them up rather quickly! You do not need to do a painstaking weeding, just remove weeds and hoe (or use any other weeding tool you might have). Digging and loosening up of the soil are tasks for later, at the end of winter.

Plant and sow for winter !
The autumn is a season when there is a lot to try in the vegetable garden. It is essentially leaf vegetables which grow much quicker than roots vegetables and are more frost resistant. For example transplant lamb’s lettuce which grows even during the cold season. Sow some land Cress (or Bittercress/Rocketcress), which has the same flavour than watercress and withstands bad weather. Think also about sowing some winter cabbages as their melting flesh is wonderful in stews. You can already plant garden vegetables’ bulbs such as early onions, shallots and garlic.
Do not forget to take measures suited to your climate. In the mountains, think about protecting your vegetables with a suitable shelter such as cold frames, wintering fleeces or even better; grow your vegetables in a greenhouse. In warmer climates or by the sea, on the contrary you can try to do a late sowing of root vegetables such as beetroots, radishes (eating or winter varieties) and turnips. Eaten young and tender, there is no comparison with the ones bought in shops!

And growing vegetables in pots ?
Winter is a delicate season for vegetables grown in pots, as they do not like frost at root level. If you do some gardening in town, choose a spot sheltered from draught. Winter leaf vegetables such as lamb’s lettuce and Bittercress grow well in pots. You can also sow salads which grow quickly and give you a real harvest on your balcony!
