  • Vivacious plants are those plants that last several years but do not produce wood, unlike trees and shrubs. That is why they are called perennials. There is a huge range of flowers and foliages, but also berries and even autumnal colours. No garden should be without them !

    Before planting...
The choice of vivacious plants is so large that it is important to decide on the effect that you are after. Some are popular because they are easy to grow (Asters are an example), others for their large size (Eulalie or Miscanthus) and others for their unrivalled flowers (like Gauras). There are also some small, delicate gems that are as beautiful as orchids or with exceptionally refined colours. Try these ones if you are experienced but if you are a beginner, it is better to stick some of the more reliable types.
All sorts of colours and types of foliage are possible: make your own choice and mix a few different varieties. Some vivacious plants have a tendency to grow in dense compact clumps like the Siberian Iris, whilst others will spread themselves out in large clumps and can become quite invasive like the variegated Goutweed (Aegopodium podagraria 'Variegata'). The larger vivacious plants can be used as a seasonal hedge (they will die down in winter) or to cover the back of a border. The smallest ones should be grown at the front of borders or around the base of shrubs to cover the soil. These ones are called ground cover as they have a tendency to spread out like vivacious geraniums.

    At planting time
The best time for planting vivacious plants is in the spring and autumn. In hot climates, it is best to plant in the autumn so that they can establish themselves during the dormant period. Otherwise, plant in the spring when the last of the frosts has passed. It is best to plant when the plant is in a dormant state: those large flowering pots that are sold will have an immediate effect but believe me they will not give you the same satisfaction!

    Looking after them
In autumn, vivacious plants like that the surrounding ground is covered with a layer of dead leaves. Remove the leaves at the end of winter as the young shoots appear at the base of the old stems. Watch out for attacks from slugs, which will eat the tender shoots. Anti slug treatments based on iron phosphate are respectful to both fauna and the environment and will prove very useful.
