  • Before planting anything in an already used pot, think about the right action to take. You will avoid diseases and mostly, you will obtain more beautiful plants. And for container grown plants, this is the best reward!

To Change or keep, the dilemma
Flowering bulbs which have produced a lot, seasonal plants which have blossomed a great deal… You want to give them another chance to flower again. But for that, you have to keep them in the green, look after them so that they rebuild their reserves. Meanwhile, they take space and that is just what you are lacking of on your balcony or your terrace. You just have to choose: it is fascinating to follow the phases of a plant throughout the entire year but when you wish to have flowers all year round, there is a need to renew plants and therefore you have to make space!

    Keep the soil or not?
When you reuse a window box or a pot, the soil that it holds can be reused only under certain conditions: It only had a small developing plant (Basil for example) which has not suffered from disease and of which the roots have not developed into the entire available space in the pot. The best option is still to renew the soil, if only to offer a rich, nutritional substrate to your future plantations.

    A little disinfection
Once the pots have been emptied out, clean them under water. Not only will you remove any possible hidden plants’ bugs (slugs love to hide under pots’ rims!) But mostly, this will give your pots some shine back as they are less elegant when dirty and neglected. All that is needed is to clean them with warm, soapy water. There is no need for bleach and other toxic products.
