We talk a lot about bio gardens, ecological gardening, or yet again of natural, sustainable gardens etc… What does it mean exactly? Follow our guide and look at your garden with new eyes !
A simple principle
Behind all these words, there is in reality only one idea: gardening without using pesticides. Let us not forget that we spread in our gardens more pesticides than in cultivated agricultural land!
Biological, ecological or natural gardening simply consists in growing our plants using soft or natural processes and as we will see later on, looking at our gardens in a different way.
In between
There is an intermediate between classic gardening and biological gardening called the « reasonable gardening ». This method consists of using chemicals only in small doses and only when softer methods have failed. It means using the least possible pesticides.
There are cases where ecological solutions are less efficient than chemical ones. It is difficult for example, when we have a large garden or very little free time, to keep gravelled garden paths weeds free.
If you are convinced that chemical products must be avoided at all cost, then you can choose to grow a smaller area, depending on the time you can allocate to its maintenance.
If you think that a clean, weed free garden path is more important than protecting the environment, then use chemical solutions.
It is a question of personal choice… and far from me to influence you, even if I have my preference !
At peace with nature
The most important is without a doubt to look at your garden with new eyes. It is not a space where you need to fight in order to keep it under control, but an enjoyable space, where you can play with nature, and not be against her. A garden is to be enjoyed!
So let us make peace with a few daisies in our lawn, accept that moss grows in the shade provided by the trees, and not spend our time tracking every undesirable growth.
About the good and not so good
Let us be honest, gardening without pesticides calls upon some techniques, which are not essential. Manures, plants decoctions, biological fight and numerous other biological methods have less importance than the fact of understanding our garden. Do not solely focus your attention on biological methods of gardening: take time to know your soil; to understand why this plant thrives when that one does not...
Usual "tips" for biological gardening are only a means to an end. They do not guarantee good results every time. This is why certain gardeners going from classical to biological gardening experience a few setbacks, which is a shame!
