Sow directly in the ground or under a frame:
- Sow thinly directly in to the ground, cover lightly with fine soil, firm down and water with a fine spray. Keep the soil moist until they come through.
- A month after sowing when the seedlings have 3 leaves; carry out the first pricking out removing the seedlings gently. Space the seedlings about 10cm apart.
- Later when the plants have between 4 and 6 leaves repeat the procedure and space them between 60cm and 70cm apart. The process of pricking out will strengthen the roots.
Pruning and looking after:
- Water regularly, mulch the ground around the plants.
- No pruning is necessary.
- Towards the end of June, break the principal vein of the central leaves thus giving the flower head better protection.
- Harvest them as needed, by cutting the flower head along with a few cm of stalk.
