Early, fast-growing ancient variety.
The stem grows just above ground level, and the swollen part is round, compact and purple.
The flesh is white, tender with a delicate nutty flavour.
It is better eaten young when it has the size of an egg.
Type of soil: Rich, moist, and well-drained.
Sowing time: From March to July.
Harvest time: From June to October.
Site: Partial shade to full sun.
Sowing technique:
- Sow in rows ½ cm deep, in a cold frame or outdoor after the last frost.
- Transplant 1 month after sowing, keeping seedlings 35/40 cm apart.
- Protect from flea beetle when growing.
Care:
- Water frequently and add mulch.
- Hoe and weed regularly.
- Harvest when young, to avoid eating stringy flesh.
