Properties and uses:
The Terebinth tree (Pistacia terebinthus) is a hardy Mediterranean shrub. It tolerates poor limestone soils, and it is drought and sea spray resistant. It is appreciated for its deciduous foliage with a strong resinous smell and its hardiness in extreme climate conditions. In spring, new red shoots grow, then the foliage turns to olive green or blueish green in summer and finally takes on beautiful autumn colours. The small red berries are also a birds’ favourite.
This wild shrub of the genus Pistacia can be planted in hedges, alone or in dry rocky soils for reforestation. Its wood and sap (Chios turpentine) have been used for their aromatic and medicinal properties since Antiquity.
