Propriétés et emplois:
Carya laciniosa, the Shellbark hickory, is of the walnut family. On mature trees, the bark peels away from the trunk in long strips, which gives the tree a remarkable appearance. The young, delicate leaves are green in spring, then turn yellow before falling in autumn.
The nuts are edible and generally harvested in autumn, although wildlife harvest most of them as they are difficult to detach from the shell. It is advised to plant several trees to obtain better nuts.
The Shellbark Hickory, although hardly ever cultivated, is appreciated for the quality of its wood. It is hard, strong and very flexible, making it a favoured wood for tool handles and sport items.
