Area of origin: Orient, Europe.
Adult Dimensions: Height up to 20 m (65,6'), width up to 12 m (39,4').
Foliage: Deciduous.
Soil Type: Dry to wet but not excessive. Rich, and heavy. Dislikes lime.
Hardiness: Prefers climate that is not too dry. Hardy to -28°C.
Exposure: Full sun.
Properties and uses:
Very beautiful and abundant white flowers in April before the leaves. The little pears are sour but edible.
Planted alone in parks and gardens or within a mixed country hedge. Very good quality wood much sought after in cabinet making.
A number of cultivars have been developed for producing fruit.('Williams', 'Doyenné de juillet', 'Colette', etc). Also used as grafting stock for fruit trees. -
