Area of origin: Northern Pakistan, Nepal, India (Annam), China, Myanmar, Vietnam, Borneo (1300-3000 m) (1420-3280yds). Introduced into Europe in 1818.

Properties and uses:
This tree has a twisted trunk and thick bark which detaches itself in large pieces. The fruits take 2 years to ripen. The evergreen serrated leaves are shiny green and silvery white underneath. They can measure up to 20cm (7,8") long and are 2 or 3 times as long as they are wide.
