  • Area of origin: Southern Ontario, Central and Eastern United States. Introduced into Europe in 1908.
Adult Dimensions: Height up to 45 m (148'), width up to 35m (115').
    Foliage: Deciduous.
Soil Type: All, but prefers alluvial ground.
    Hardiness: Tolerant to -20°C.
    Exposure: Full light.

    Properties and uses:
This big oak tree has a very straight trunk and an open and rounded shape. The dark green shiny leaves become bright red in autumn. The leaves can measure up to 18cm (7,2") long and 13cm (5,3") wide. The acorns are round and can measure up to 2.8cm. They take 2 years to ripen. This oak grows better in moist soils than Quercus rubra, and also grows more rapidly.
It was named in 1860 in honour of M.SHUMARD, a geologist from the state of Texas.
The ornamental qualities of this tree make it excellent for planting in rows. The red brown coloured wood is strong and heavy. It is used for veneering and in furniture making.
