Easy to grow.
Type of soil: Rich and well-drained
Sowing time: From March to May
Harvest time: From June to September.
Site: Full sun.
Sow directly in the ground:
- Sow 3 seeds together in a small hole with 1 metre of space all the way around. Cover with a mixture of soil and compost. Water using a fine spray.
- Choose the strongest plant from each hole once they have come through.
- If you live in a cold area, they can be sown in pots.
Care and pruning:
- Mulch the ground around them to stop the fruits getting dirty and to preserve moisture.
- After four leaves get rid of the cotyledons, and pinch out above the second leaf. On the subsequent two shoots that form, pinch them out above the third leaf.
- Carry on doing this pinching out two leaves after each fruit that forms. Water them regularly.
- Harvest the melons when the skin starts to yellow. The melon should easily come away from its peduncle.
