Properties and uses:
The Japanese Ginger is an herbaceous perennial plant appreciated for its exotic aspect and its culinary qualities.
It develops a lush jungle-like foliage with long lanceolate leaves, which give a nice fragrance when creased.
The creamy-yellow flowers emerge at ground level in July. The flower buds are prized for their delicate flavour when finely minced in a cooked dish, having the fruity flavour of ginger without the spice.
Although it is root hardy, it is recommended to mulch it well in winter.
The Japanese Ginger thrives along undergrowth, in a flowerbed or in a pot placed in the shade during summer.
Several varieties exist:
- Japanese ginger 'White Feather': Variety with variegated foliage. The green leaves are edged with yellow. Just like Japanese ginger, the rhizomes and young shoots are edible. - Related Categories
