Area of origin: Northern America.
Adult dimensions: Height up to 25 m, width up to 12 m.
Foliage: Deciduous

Exposure: Partial shade to full sun

Properties and uses:
The Shagbark Hickory is a vigorous tree of handsome appearance, appreciated in parks and arboretums.
The unusual peeling grey bark juts out from one or both ends, curling outward and giving its name to this tree.
The young and delicate green leaves turn golden yellow in autumn before falling.
The thick-shelled nuts are harvested in autumn and taste like the pecan nuts. It is recommended to plant several trees to obtain the best nuts.
The Shagbark Hickory tree is hard to cultivate. When burned, it gives off a fragrant smoke, useful for meat-curing process. The wood of the Shagbark Hickory is very hard and used in woodworking. The meat of the nuts is lipid rich and used to make oil.
