Properties and uses:
Bergenia cordifolia evergreen, ground-cover perennial that is both robust and highly versatile. It brings a unique architectural structure to the garden thanks to its bold foliage.
/- A spectacular foliage all year round: bright green in spring and summer, it remains dense even in the heart of winter. With cold temperatures, its large, leathery, glossy, heart-shaped leaves often take on purple or bronze hues.
- Early spring flowering: from late winter (March-April), sturdy stems emerge above the foliage to bear clusters of bright pink, bell-shaped flowers. This early bloom provides a valuable food source for the first pollinators.
- A hardy perennial: once established, it requires very little watering and no special care.
- An effective groundcover: its density naturally limits the growth of weeds.
Different uses in the garden
Borders and Pathways: to highlight a pathway with a clean, graphic look.
Rock gardens and Woodland: Ideal to revegetate difficult areas or at the base of trees.
Pots and containers: adds a touch of evergreen to terraces and balconies.
The extra touch: Bergenia is extremely resistant to urban pollution, which makes it an excellent ally for city gardens and public spaces.
A bit of history: Bergenia is also nicknamed the "cobbler's plant" because it was once used by the artisans who made and repaired leather shoes to tan hides. Indeed, Bergenia is naturally very rich in tannins—a natural plant-based chemical substance—which helped to soften and protect the leather. -
