Area of origin : China, Introduced in Europe in 1869 by the abbot David Armond.
Adult dimensions : Height: up to 20 meters (65.6'). Spread: up to 15 meters (49.2').
Foliage : Deciduous, leaves staggered on stem.
Soil Type : Suit soil too moist or chalky. Add heather compost to avoid a soil too compact.
Hardiness : Hardy up to -17°C.
Exposure : Full sun.
Properties and uses:
This tree's name comes from its original tissue-shaped flowers.
It flowers between May and June, with flowers lasting for about 15 days.
The edible fruit which follows flowering is egg-shaped and green, changing to purple and finally yellow-brown in the autumn.
The mature fruit is apparent on the tree for a large part of winter and can be consumed overripe.
The pyramid shape of this tree is similar to that of the lime tree.
It can be planted either singly or as part of row plantations.
But be patient! – First flowering arrives after 10 or 12 years!
