Properties and uses:
Santolina chamaecyparissus, known as Cotton Lavender or Lavender Cotton, is a Mediterranean, evergreen shrub and a must-have for any stony gardens, rockeries and borders.
Its round, compact bearing forms a dense cushion of felted grey-green leaves reminding those of the Cypress. Pruning after the flowering will keep its graphic aspect.
The leaves have a rather aromatic odour when lightly rubbed, which evokes a mix of olive oil and turpentine, traditionally used to repel moths.
From June to August, the Cotton Lavender produces masses of bright yellow, pompom-like flowers which brighten flowerbeds. It is also a good ground cover plant that prevents weed germination.
Cotton Lavender doesn’t need much watering and is extremely drought resistant; it thrives in poor, rocky, well-drained soil.
